Making the right choice

Though neurofeedback is different than psychotherapy, it is still important to choose a therapist in whom you have confidence. Don't be afraid to ask your questions. Neurofeedback is a significant undertaking, and you deserve answers.

How do I find a reputable practitioner?

One good way to find a neurotherapist is to review the membership list of the International Society for Neurofeedback and Research. ISNR is the main professional organization of neurofeedback practitioners. Another way is to search the internet for practitioners who have websites like this one.

Finding a therapist on a list or simply finding a website isn't enough, of course. You're going to want to ask your own questions.

Since neurotherapy is relatively new in the larger mental health field it is not unusual to run into therapists who are relatively new in their neurofeedback practice. This is not a problem if they are part of a network of therapists with whom they consult. A new neurotherapist should also be routinely obtaining supervision from a more experienced therapist. That way a client can get the benefit of much more experience than that held by their therapist. Consultation is a good practice in neurotherapy as it is in other medical fields.

You'll also want to find a therapist who goes to conferences and trainings on an ongoing basis. Neurofeedback is a rapidly expanding field where new information is available frequently. It can make a difference to have a therapist who keeps up to date.

The good news about all of this is that the field is small enough that it is not hard to keep up to date. With a little effort on your part you can assure yourself that you are getting competent, up-to-date treatment.
